Electric cargo bike equipped with hydrogen range extender

The range of our very own electric cargo bike was extended with a hydrogen fuel cell in collaboration with an engineering student. Liam Du Bois, following a masters in engineering technology at KU Leuven,  set out in his thesis work to theoretically assess the technical nitbits on how to extend the range of an electric cargo bike and practically execute it. We want to thank Liam for his great work.

The electromotor with battery was supplemented with a small fuel cell and hydrogen bottle, which can extend the range two- or threefold. It was a fun project which we will be taking further to integrate a commercial refueling nozzle and a fixed H2 graded vessel, to ultimately be able to refuel the bike with our very own hydrogen produced with solar energy. How cool is that?

What is the added value of hydrogen for bikes? We believe that hydrogen is promising for certain heavy duty applications, such as large hydrogen cargo bikes replacing vans for last mile delivery.
